# Segment Types

> Automatically categorize fans based on behavior and engagement level

This page describes **legacy segments** created with the older Fan Lists builder. Existing legacy segments continue to update and can still be reviewed. For new segmentation, use the unified [Smart List Builder](./smart-lists), which combines spend, chat, and subscription filters on one screen.

<Note>
  Do not look for an **Add Segment** workflow for new lists. Create a **Smart List** instead. Keep legacy segments only where an existing campaign or process still depends on them.
</Note>

## Moving to Smart Lists

Before replacing a legacy segment, note which campaigns use it and recreate the same intent with Smart List filters. Compare the previewed fan count, update the campaign targeting, and only then remove the old segment if it is no longer used.
